Great news for any consumers out there who have may in the past have been hit with unexpectedly high mobile phone bills from calling 0844, or even worse the dreaded 0870 numbers!
Recent changes mean that businesses are now required by law to provide an alternate standard rate number, (that’s a number beginning with 01, 02 or 03), for any of their incoming customer service or “post contract” calls. This change does not apply to any existing telephone numbers that are associated with pre-sale, sales or indeed more general enquiries.
This change will mean that future calls to these new standard rate numbers should be absorbed by existing inclusive or free minutes of most standard mobile phone contracts so that customers will no longer incur any additional charges just to have their complaint heard or query answered when contacting a customer services department.
As before, any calls to 0844, 0870, and 0871 numbers are extremely unlikely to be “free” under any landline contract and worse still, many mobile companies will continue to charge for calls to so called ‘freephone’ numbers such as those beginning with 0800 and 0808!
In the past, savvy consumers who needed to make calls from their mobile, located and used the number some companies provide on their website for callers from outside the UK (usually prefixed +44) as these would most likely be covered under the mobile phone contracts.
